BenQ’s ScreenBar Max is interesting for one clear reason: it is a single desk-clamped lamp designed around a dual-monitor work surface, not a normal monitor light bar stretched into a new marketing story.

That does not make it the default dual-monitor light. At a stated U.S. price of $289—plus $39 for the optional base—it needs to solve a real coverage or placement problem that a lamp you already own, one monitor light, or two simpler lights cannot solve cleanly.

This is a specs-and-evidence assessment, not a product test. Serious WFH has not used the ScreenBar Max. The fit details below come from current BenQ documentation; the independent-use observations come from Engadget’s five-day hands-on report.

  • A laptop-only or single-monitor desk that does not need the extra width.
  • A video-call setup that mainly needs light directed toward the face.
  • A desk with a cable tray, wall, monitor arms, webcam, glass surface, or other geometry that blocks the clamp or lamp position.
  • Anyone who wants our recommendation to be based on a Serious WFH hands-on test; it is not.

The news is the coverage model, not just a longer light bar

BenQ describes the ScreenBar Max as its first ScreenBar made specifically for dual monitors. Its lamp head is 85 cm wide, and the company states that it can illuminate a 135 × 58 cm area to at least 500 lux when positioned as specified. It combines downward task lighting with a rear ambient light, automatic dimming, presence detection, adjustable brightness, and color temperatures from 2700K to 6000K.

The important distinction is physical. A conventional monitor light normally mounts to one screen. The ScreenBar Max clamps to the desk behind the monitors, spans the center of the setup, and can be set to three fixed height positions. That avoids asking one monitor to support a very wide lamp, but it moves the fit problem to the desk edge, monitor arrangement, wall clearance, and cable path.

It is a new layout option, not a reason to discard lighting that already works.

What the ScreenBar Max can replace—and what it cannot

On the right desk, it can replace a pair of task lights, one conventional light bar that cannot cover the secondary work area, and a separate ambient light behind the monitors. The unified controls can also reduce the need to adjust multiple lights during the day.

It does not replace every lighting job:

  • It is not automatically a face light. Its front LEDs are designed to illuminate the desk, while its rear LEDs light the area behind the monitors.
  • It does not replace room lighting needed for safe movement or general visibility.
  • It does not provide independent left and right task-light control.
  • It does not remove screen, webcam, monitor-arm, and wall-clearance checks.
  • It does not make two monitors easier to drive, mount, or cable. Those remain separate setup problems.

The exact fit checks matter more than the feature list

BenQ’s specifications describe a large, desk-mounted object: roughly 85 cm wide, 37.4 cm deep, and 75.5 cm tall at its maximum configuration, with a listed net weight of 2.65 kg. The clamp accepts desks up to 6 cm thick and occupies roughly 9 × 7 cm at the mounting point. BenQ recommends placing the lamp head about 5 cm in front of the monitors.

Those measurements create practical questions that a product photo cannot answer:

  • Is there a clear, structurally suitable center section at the back edge of the desk?
  • Does a cable tray, modesty panel, monitor-arm clamp, grommet, wall, shelf, or window ledge occupy that space?
  • Can the monitors sit behind the lamp head while the head remains about 5 cm forward of them?
  • Will a centered webcam or two monitor-mounted webcams conflict with the lamp?
  • Can the lamp rise above the monitors without entering the camera frame or hitting a shelf?
  • Is the 180 cm power cable long enough to reach the dedicated adapter without hanging across a moving desk?

BenQ says the lamp can work with monitor arms when it is centered and the arm arrangement leaves room for it. That is a starting point, not proof of fit. Engadget’s reviewer found that an under-desk cable-management box interfered with the clamp, and noted that limited backward adjustment could be awkward with wall-mounted monitors.

Glass desks should not use the clamp. BenQ directs those setups to the optional weighted base, whose footprint is about 16.8 × 23.4 cm. That changes both the price and the amount of desk space the system consumes.

Monitor arrangement is part of the purchase

The official setup guidance changes the height position according to monitor size and orientation. For two horizontal monitors, BenQ places screens under 27 inches at the lowest setting and 27- to 34-inch screens at the middle or highest setting. For mixed horizontal-and-vertical arrangements, the supported vertical-screen guidance tops out at 28 inches, with the height position changing across the range.

That makes this a better fit for a deliberate, stable monitor arrangement than for a desk that is rearranged every week. A laptop that frequently moves in and out of the second-screen position, a rotating display, or monitor arms that are constantly repositioned may benefit more from independent lights.

Coverage figures also need context. A stated 500-lux area is useful for understanding intended scale; it does not guarantee that your keyboard, notebook, face, glossy screen, or room will look the way you want. Monitor angle, lamp height, ambient light, reflective surfaces, and personal brightness preference still change the result.

What the independent hands-on report adds

Engadget’s Max Miller reported using the ScreenBar Max for five days on a dual-display desk with a 27-inch monitor and a smaller 14.6-inch display positioned off axis. The report found the lighting bright and even enough for that setup, with no monitor glare in the reviewer’s arrangement. Presence detection worked well, and front task light and rear ambient light could be controlled separately.

The same report identified limitations that matter more than launch language:

  • One selector cycles through task light, ambient light, or both, which can make adjustments less direct than dedicated controls for every function.
  • A cable-management box under the desk conflicted with the clamp.
  • Limited backward adjustment could be a problem when monitors sit close to a wall.
  • A tablet rail below the monitor produced a slight reflection even though the screens did not.
  • The reviewer considered the result impressive but difficult to justify against much cheaper lamps that provide most of the basic function.

Five days on one desk is useful independent evidence, not universal proof. It does not test every monitor size, arm arrangement, glossy surface, long-term sensor behavior, warranty experience, or return path. It also does not turn our assessment into a hands-on recommendation.

Is $289 reasonable?

The useful question is not whether the lamp feels premium. It is whether one $289 system removes enough compromises to beat the simpler alternatives for your desk.

The price can make sense when all of these are true:

  1. The work surface is wide enough that one conventional light leaves a meaningful dark area.
  2. Two independent lights would create unwanted mounts, cables, controls, or visual clutter.
  3. Rear ambient light is a feature you will actually use.
  4. The desk geometry cleanly accepts the clamp or optional base.
  5. You expect the monitor arrangement to remain stable.
  6. The retailer provides a practical return window for a fit-sensitive product.

If one monitor is primary and the secondary screen only holds chat or reference material, broad symmetrical illumination may have little value. Put the keyboard and notes in the primary work zone and test one movable light first. If each side hosts different physical tasks, two independent lamps may be more controllable even if they look less unified.

The optional base raises the combined stated price to $328. It may solve a clamp problem, but it does not solve limited desk depth or wall clearance.

For a carefully measured fixed desk, the broad front light, rear ambient light, automatic dimming, and presence sensing form a coherent package. For most other desks, the same $289 price exposes how much of the basic lighting job can be solved with placement and simpler hardware.

Treat it as a conditional candidate: prove the dark-zone problem, prove the desk fit, and test glare and controls during the return window. If any one of those checks fails, choose the simpler lighting path.
